What is the distinction between Airbnb and VRBO?

Nowadays, there are many sites that offer rental housing for holidays. VRBO and Airbnb are some huge rental players for holiday homes in the travel industry.

What is the difference between Airbnb and VRBO?

If you are going on a trip, then you have a question, which site is more preferable for booking vacation rental.

Airbnb charges a 20% service fee. It includes a cleaning fee and an extra charge for guests. In addition, you will pay Airbnb fees and taxes. The VRBO / HomeAway visitor service charge is between 6% and 12%.

If you want to place your home on a VRBO, you have two alternatives. A VRBO rental covenant indicates that you can pay yearly charge of $499, which allows unlimited requests and bookings. If you prefer a payment structure for booking, you will be charged a fee, starting at 8% for booking. This number includes 5% of the commission charged for the rental, and 3% of the commission for a transaction on a credit card of the total amount of pay acquired from your visitor. By the way 2% may be charged if the credit card is not from the US.

In case VRBO is rented more than six weeks a year, the annual subscription is the best.

If we talk about Airbnb: Airbnb is more simple. There is no yearlyl subscription – you will pay a fixed 3% of the cost of each reservation. With Airbnb, you don’t have to pay any credit card fees.

Rating and reviews

There’s no single way for how to rank higher in Airbnb and VRBO’s search pages, but there are certainly best practices to follow.

At first, you’ll need to generate positive reviews, and this goes for both sites. If guests are staying without leaving a review, you may need to tactfully reach out and encourage them to do so. You’ll also need to respond to any negative reviews to assure potential guests that if there was a problem, you’ve already taken the steps to address it. Negative reviews are inevitable, but it’s how you respond to them that makes all the difference.

In addition, it’s important to include the right amount of photos for each website. To rank high on VRBO, you’ll need at least 24 high-quality photos of your home. There isn’t as steadfast a number for Airbnb, however you’ll need a minimum of 5 to appear in mobile search results.

Features for instant booking on Airbnb and VRBO

The Instant Booking features on VRBO and Airbnb are almost the same. You can enable or disable the function at any time. Both websites claim that enabling the function will likely give you a boost in ranking. In case you don’t feel comfortable with the guest for any reason, you can still cancel the reservation penalty-free. But if you cancel for any other reason, you’ll get the standard penalty for cancellations.

Guest experience

The guest experiences of each listing site are very similar. Airbnb and VRBO charge a service fee between 6% and 12% of the total, excluding taxes, which the guest pays.

The only major distinction is the number of single rooms for rent on Airbnb. It’s easier to find shared, shorter-term accommodation on Airbnb than VRBO.

Also, both websites require a closed communication system, so it’s difficult to form a relationship with your guests and determine whether your home would be right for them. If a guest calls VRBO or Airbnb for more information on your home, the agent they speak to can only provide as much information as is included in the listing.

Additionally, HomeAway is now pledging to track users online and take a cut of direct bookings. For example, if your guests find your home on HomeAway, but reach out to book directly through you, HomeAway is attempting to trace that user path, and charge you 10% of that booking.

Now, if you’re managing your vacation rental yourself, you can be sure you know the differences, advantages, and disadvantages of both websites.

Travel Tips

Five things to look for when booking a hotel room

When you travel, staying at a good hotel really can make a big difference to your travel experience.

So before you book your next trip, check out these five things for a perfect hotel stay and a perfect hotel room.

  • Cleanliness

Travelers find a clean hotel and a clean hotel room the most important thing by far. Mold in the shower, urine stains on the toilet seat or a dead cockroach under the bed definitely ruins your stay at hotels! Nothing feels better than coming home to a beautiful, comfortable hotel room after a day out exploring.

  • Friendly hotel staff

More so than any facilities the hotel offers, travelers care about how friendly the staff is. The friendly hotel staff  makes us feel welcome and part of the group.

  • A comfortable bed

Nothing beats a large, comfortable bed that just makes you want to stay in your hotel room all day.

We’ve all stayed in places where the bed has been substandard and it’s amazing how a bad night’s sleep can make the next day a real struggle. And it’s not just the bed. The pillows and blankets can make a huge difference as well. There are even resorts with a “pillow menu”: a list of pillows to choose from to make sure you get to sleep on your perfect pillow…

  • A good location

Normally you book a hotel room because you want to (or have to) visit a certain place. Location being in the top 5 of things to look for when booking a hotel room therefore is obvious. But, don’t underestimate how difficult it can be to find out if a hotel’s location actually works for you. It can be so that hotels that you think are close to where you want to be will turn out to be either farther away than you think, or close to where you want to be but in an unsafe part of town… Read plenty of reviews from other travelers to prevent these mistakes. And, be careful when booking a hotel that has hardly any reviews (yet).

  • Good value for money

Of course, nobody likes to pay too much for their hotel room (or for anything really). So, good value for money is an important factor when rating a hotel.

Expensive hotels aren’t always better than budget hotels and a cheap hotel room isn’t always a bad hotel room. So check what others have to say about the hotel room you are about to book. They will most likely mention if it was worth the money or not.

Next time you are going through hotel reviews to decide which hotel to book, pay some extra attention to these five features!

And of course you should also check if your hotel offers free wi-fi, a complimentary breakfast, quiet rooms with a great view and maybe even a gorgeous swimming pool.
