How to live in a hostel: travel tips

Staying in a hostel is a great way to save money on travel. For those who are not familiar with the life of the hostel, the idea of deviating from the norm of a traditional hotel room may seem rather complicated, but this is not something to be afraid of. In addition, most of the guests are there for the same reason as you – they want to see the world without spending a lot of money. Here are great tips that all newbies should know about hostels.

1.) Participate in Hostel Activities

A lot of hostels offer tours, parties, and other activities for guests. It’s possible that you will find some a common room with a TV or a dining area. Even if you are traveling with friends, you should interact with other people who live in the hostel. They can give you their own hostel tips or insider information about where they’ve been.

A nice way to get to know your fellow roommates and the other hostel guests is organizing a potluck dinner.

2.) Wear Flip-Flops

If you decide to stay in a hostel, be sure to bring flip-flops with you. This is a necessary thing in a hostel. You will ask why? The answer is very simple. A lot of feet walk across those communal shower tiles and bedroom floors. Those feet have varying degrees of hygiene and health conditions, and if you do not want to get sick with diseases such as fungus or warts, you should wear flip-flops.

3.) Watch Your Stuff

In the hostel you will live with a person about whom you know nothing. No matter what kind of relationship you have with that person, stay safe by keeping an eye on your belongings. If the hostel issued you a locker or cubby, use it and secure it with a quality padlock. Some people sleep with their valuables in bed with them, and this is another of the hostel tips. You can put your small purse or travel backpack near the wall or under the pillow. The idea is that someone has to climb over you to get to your belongings and will definitely wake you up.

4.) Respect your neighbors

If you live in a room with a stranger, then you should behave respectfully towards him. Very often your plans will be different from your neighbor. If you need to get ready for an early flight, then you should do it as quietly as possible so as not to disturb your neighbor. If you are playing the game on your phone, use headphones or turn down the volume. The golden rule stays the same: “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.”

5.) Choose a Hostel Attentively

Before you go to the hostel, you need to find out  more information about it because each hostel provides different services and different living conditions. If you just want a quiet, clean place to sleep, where no one will disturb you, you probably don’t want to stay at the party hostel by the beach. You should read various reviews about hostels and pay particular attention to the ones posted within the last year or 6 months, because the character of a hostel can and does change.
